Letter : Camp Rio Grande, opposite Matamoros, to Mary Nixon, 1846 Apr 4.

ALS written by John Nixon, a soldier in the United States Army, 5th Infantry, to his wife, Mary Nixon, while encamped on the Rio Grande River opposite Matamoros, Mexico, during the Mexican War. Nixon describes preparations by United States and Mexican soldiers for attack, and he briefly discusses desertions and problems of obtaining supplies in camp. The letter is addressed to Mary Nixon in care of Lt. Pinkney Lugenbeel, Saint Joseph Island, Texas.
